Each Discover workshop lasts one class period and presents students with the science of nanotechnology, its applications in the world today, and possibilities and developments for the future. The workshop’s mix of interactive, hands-on, and multimedia content with applications to real world issues, gives students something to connect with. The workshop includes interactive and hands-on learning, a quiz to test student’s understanding, and, when available, a take-home sample of applied nanotechnology (nano coatings) to continue the interaction with STEM beyond our in-school visit.
Because nanotechnology is an all-encompassing interdisciplinary field, we are able to customize the workshop to special topics or subjects to align with the class visited (e.g. AP Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.) or interests of the school.

Goals:

Inspire and teach high school students about nanotechnology and potentials of STEM.
Increase student interest in pursuing STEM collegiate majors and careers.
Give students a better understanding of the opportunities in modern science and engineering.

Nanotechnology on the palm of your hands

STEM Students Participate in Hands-on Nanotech Workshops

We partnered with UltraTech International Inc., a nanotechnology company specializing in super-hydrophobic (super water-repellent) coatings.

UltraTech has been providing samples of cloth and tiles treated with a nano-coating that makes them impossible to wet. After explaining the science behind how it works, students are shown the samples to experience nanotechnology in the palm of their hands, literally. Hands-on learning through these samples greatly sparked students’ imagination and curiosity, inspiring them to ask questions and get involved.
